Chhath Puja
Thursday, 07 November 2024
Chhath is a very ancient Hindu festival. Prayers during Chhath puja are dedicated to God Sun and Chhathi Maiya. Shashthi Devi or Chhathi Maiya is also known as manas daughter of God Brahma. The festival is celebrated on the sixth day of the lunar month of Kartik (October–November) but the rituals starts two days in advance.
Nahay Khay (Day 1) -
The holy dip in water body/river is taken on this day. Ladies observing the fast can have 1 meal in the whole day.
Lohanda and Kharna (Day 2) -
On this day fasting without water is observed from the sunrise to the sunset. The fast is broken after offering the prasad to God Sun during sunset.
Sandhya Arghya (Day 3) -
On the third day of Chhath puja, arghya is offered to God Sun. A full day fast without water is observed this day of Chhath Puja. Fasting continues throughout the night and Parana (breaking fast) is done on the next day after sunrise. In the evening, a bamboo basket is decorated with fruits, thekua, rice laddus etc, after which devotees offer an arghya to the God Sun with their families. Chhathi Maiya is worshipped from a soop filled with prasad. After the worship of God Sun, Shashthi Devi songs are sung in the night and the vrat katha is heard.
On the eve of this day, the entire household accompanies the vratins to a riverbank, pond or a common large water body to make the offerings (Arghya) to the setting God Sun. Besides the fasting women, there are friends and family, and numerous participants and onlookers, all willing to help and receive the blessings of the worshipper. The folk songs are sung on the evening of Chhath
Usha Arghya (Day 4) -
On the last day of Chhath puja in the morning, an arghya is offered to the God Sun. On this day, before sunrise, the devotees have to go to the riverbank to offer an arghya to the rising God Sun. After this, the protection of the child and the happiness of the entire family is sought from Chhatti maiyya. After worship, devotees eat prasad which is called Paran or Parana in order to break 36 hour long fast.
