This festival is celebrated on the day Sun enters Capricorn and become Uttarayan. According to the scriptures, Dakshinayan symbolizes the night of god or the sign of negativity. On this day sun starts its journey towards north and become Uttarayan which is the day period of God

This festival is also called Khichdi, Sankranti or Maghi. On this day people take holy dip in rivers, offering Naivedhya (food offered to deity) to Lord Surya, offering charity or Dakshina and performing Shraddha rituals. On this day, there is a tradition of eating Khichdi, Sesame and jaggery ladoos, Gajak, Revdi, chikkis and donating the same. There is very special importance of bathing and charity on Makar Sankranti.
