This festival is celebrated on the day of Magha Amavasya. Amavasya should be Sooryodya kalik. Mauni Amavasya is also referred as 'Maghi Amavasya'. In Andhra Pradesh, Mauni Amavasya is celebrated as ‘Chollangi Amavasya’.

The devotees get up early on this day to take holy dip in the Ganga or other holy rivers at sunrise. If a person cannot visit any pilgrimage destination on this day, he/she must add little Ganga jal to the bathing water. This practice of taking a holy bath becomes more significant during the Kumbh Mela and Magha Mela.

Offering charity is another important ritual for the day.On this day people donate food, clothes and other essentials to the poor and needy people.It is believed that if one remains silent on this day, it brings good health and knowledge. On this day, bathing and donating in silence is considered to be of great importance.It is also said that on this day the rishi Manu was born and the word Manu is the origin of Mauni.
